Are airport cleaning robots the future for air travel?

Hong Kong airport is testing a new robot. One that can clean and disinfect passengers by using a full body disinfection booth.

This could be the future for air travel to ensure we stay safe and give passengers the confidence to fly again.

The robot is less like a traditional robot and more like a photo booth. The company behind this cleaning robot is CLeanTech which claims to remotely kill viruses in 40 seconds.

Before entering the booth individuals will have their temperature checked. Once inside the booth, individuals are sprayed with a sanitising product.

The interior of the booth has an antimicrobial coating that will kill viruses and bacteria found on clothing and body by using the technologies of photocatalyst and “nano needles”. 

Another technique used to prevent cross contamination, which is used in hospitals and medical centres is keeping the booth under negative pressure.

Steven Yiu, Deputy Director, Service Delivery of the AA, said, “The safety and wellbeing of airport staff and passengers are always our first priority. Although air traffic has been impacted by the pandemic, the AA spares no effort in ensuring that the airport is a safe environment for all users. We will continue to look into new measures to enhance our cleaning and disinfection work.”
